The PC format computer has always relied almost entirely on operating systems supplied by Microsoft.
Occasionally, you would find someone running the Linux operating system, but not often.
That has changed. Today, nearly ten percent of desktop computer users are running Linux of
one flavour or another.
A few years ago, I decided to try this wonderful free operating system, Linux.
I downloaded a version of linux, which shall remain nameless, and booted up my
computer. After watching many pages of perplexing text scroll up the screen, I
had my machine booted up in linux!
Actually, what I had was a black screen with a dollar sign in the upper left corner.
It took very little time for me to make the brilliant assumption that this was the command prompt.
But what to type? Let's see whats in this box. I typed "dir". "Command not found,"
it replied. Hmm. It had to have a text editor. I typed "edit". Same reply. I frowned.
I needed help. Then I smiled, and typed the obvious. "help". The screen seemed to sneer
as it returned with, "command not found".
Being of a patient nature, I sighed and shutdown my first session in Linux (the only
way I could get it to shutdown was to pull the power plug). I would get a book on linux...
